Wrist pain

Wrist pain when loading your hands, after a fall or from hours of typing? We treat TFCC injuries, tendinopathies such as De Quervain and sport-specific overload from strength training and CrossFit. For fractures and post-surgery recovery we work alongside the orthopaedic surgeons and hand surgeons at Xpert Clinics and OLVG.

Wrist pain treatment at Movement Based Therapy

What kinds of wrist pain are there?

The wrist is a complex joint. Eight small carpal bones, a large number of tendons and the capsuloligamentous apparatus work together to allow both strength and precision. As a result, symptoms can develop in very different places, with very different causes.

Acute wrist pain

Acute wrist pain often appears after a fall on the outstretched hand or after a sudden movement during sport. Pain and sometimes swelling are present straight away and the wrist becomes difficult to load. It is important to first rule out a fracture or a ligament/capsular injury before starting rehabilitation.

Chronic wrist pain

Chronic wrist pain often develops gradually through repeated loading. Think of typing, strength training, CrossFit, climbing or playing music. An imbalance in strength, an error in technique or a training load that builds up too quickly can overload the joint. The pain is often more diffuse and gets worse as the load increases.

Our approach

At Movement Based Therapy, as the name suggests, we specialise in movement. Our treatment methods always have the same starting point: getting you back to pain-free movement through targeted exercise.

With wrist pain we never look at the wrist in isolation. Often the position of the elbow, shoulder or trunk plays a role in how the wrist is loaded. We map out that whole chain and build recovery on top of it.

The treatment plan is always tailored to your needs and goals. We work towards autonomy: during the programme we also pass on knowledge, so if symptoms return you know exactly what to do to prevent them from getting worse.

Is surgery needed?

Sometimes the wrist condition is severe enough that surgery is required. Think of certain fractures, a TFCC injury that does not respond to conservative treatment, or a carpal tunnel that needs surgical decompression. At our practice we work closely with specialists at OLVG and Xpert Clinics.

This network allows us to work quickly and effectively across disciplines. We are also specialised in rehabilitation after surgery. Questions? Get in touch via the options below.

WHY MBT

What sets us apart.

01

Active approach with strength training

Targeted strength training and exercise therapy as the foundation. Movement is your treatment, hands-on work creates the conditions for it.

02

Specialised in sports wrists

Strength training, CrossFit, climbing and racquet sports. We measure strength, mobility and sport-specific movements and build back from there.

03

Short lines with orthopaedic surgeons

Partnership with the orthopaedic surgeons and hand surgeons at OLVG and Xpert Clinics. Multidisciplinary care for severe or unclear symptoms.

04

Autonomy as the goal

During your programme you learn how to manage recurring symptoms yourself. Knowledge as part of recovery.

05

In-house training facilities

Strength training under supervision in our own training space. No separate gym needed for your rehabilitation.

OUR METHOD

Our unique method

Repeat.
01 / PHASE 1

Discover

Every treatment starts with a thorough intake. This gives us a complete picture of your physical health, movement patterns and mental well-being. We take a holistic approach and look beyond physical symptoms alone. Think sleep habits, nutrition, hydration, movement and daily stress factors.

02 / PHASE 2

Educate

Understanding your condition is the key to lasting recovery. We make sure you understand where your symptoms come from and how to manage them. This helps you recognise your body's signals and prevent future issues.

03 / PHASE 3

Recreate

We work through a tailored programme that targets weaknesses in the body. Movement is at the centre of our treatment method. With specific exercises tuned to you, we build your body's capacity to handle load and help you develop sustainable movement habits. This reduces the chance of recurring symptoms.

Evaluate

Evaluation is an essential part of our approach. We monitor your progress regularly and adjust the treatment plan when needed. This keeps the therapy aligned with your goals and needs at every stage of the process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need a GP referral for wrist pain?

No, physiotherapy is directly accessible in the Netherlands. You can book an appointment without a referral. We carry out the screening during your intake and set up the treatment plan together.

Which wrist conditions do you treat?

We treat the full spectrum: TFCC injuries, tendinopathies such as De Quervain and tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, distal radius and scaphoid fractures, wrist instability and SLAC/SLIL pathology, sport-specific overload and post-surgery recovery.

What is the difference between acute and chronic wrist pain?

Acute symptoms come on suddenly, often after a fall or a sudden movement during sport. The pain is immediate and the wrist is difficult to load. Chronic symptoms develop gradually through repeated loading, an error in technique or a training load that builds up too quickly.

My wrists hurt during strength training or CrossFit. What now?

Wrist pain during strength training and CrossFit is often technical rather than structural. We look at wrist position during front squat, clean and push press, at the mobility of the wrist and elbow, and at the load build-up in your programme. Often targeted mobility, wrist strength and a technical adjustment are enough to train pain-free again.

Do you work with a hand surgeon?

Yes, we have short lines with the orthopaedic surgeons and hand surgeons at OLVG and Xpert Clinics. For severe or unclear symptoms we can quickly switch to multidisciplinary care and refer on for further investigation or surgical consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the nature of the condition. At the end of your intake we give you a realistic estimate of the treatment programme so you know what to expect.

Cedrine helped me enormously with my recovery from recurring knee complaints. Within a few months the strength difference between both legs was minimal.

I've been helped tremendously by multiple members of the team for various issues over the course of about a year now. Not all team members have been my PT, but I have met them all and they are all great.
