Information for referrers

Movement Based Therapy is a physiotherapy and sports physiotherapy practice with three locations in Amsterdam. We work evidence-based, criteria-driven, and report progress structurally to the referrer. Short lines, no waiting list.

Collaboration with primary care and specialists

We work closely with GPs, sports physicians, trauma surgeons and orthopaedic specialists in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. For post-operative pathways we are a member of the Trauma Network Amsterdam. For sports-related referrals we collaborate structurally with Sportartsen Groep, Beld and Xpert Clinics, among others. Referrals can be made via Zorgmail, email or by phone.

Our working method in brief

Every patient starts with an extensive 60-minute intake. We map the complaint, capacity and goals, followed by an initial treatment. At the end of the intake the patient receives an estimate of the pathway. We work according to our four-phase method (Discover, Educate, Recreate, Evaluate) with objective measurements and clear criteria for progression. Progress is reported back via a brief summary.

FOR REFERRERS

At Movement Based Therapy we are ready to help your patients with high-quality physiotherapy care. Our team of specialist physiotherapists works with a movement-focused approach to guide patients through recovery and back to their sports goals. We have a range of expertise in-house, but are also critical of our own work. If we believe a referral does not fit us, we will help find a suitable alternative.

Why refer to MBT?

  • Specialist care: We specialise in the treatment of (sports) injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation and people with long-standing pain complaints.
  • Individually tailored treatments: We use our in-house method to systematically build a tailored treatment pathway for every patient.
  • Preventive approach: Beyond recovery, we focus on the longer term, so patients return stronger and with less pain — and have the tools to manage recurring issues themselves.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration: We work closely with GPs, specialists and other healthcare providers to ensure holistic and efficient treatment.

Which patients can you refer?

We treat patients with a wide range of complaints and goals, including:

  • Acute or chronic sports injuries
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation (e.g. knee, ankle, shoulder, hip, wrist)
  • Posture and movement-related complaints
  • Load tolerance issues, including chronic conditions where a strong body is essential for quality of life and self-reliance.

Our approach is an active form of rehabilitation, so it is important the patient knows we will get them moving with exercise therapy. This is not what every patient wants, in our experience. We therefore ask you to communicate this clearly with the patient before referring.

EXPERTISE

Conditions and pathways we treat

A broad range of complaints, with a clear specialism in sports and trauma rehabilitation:

WHAT WE OFFER

What we offer referrers.

01

No waiting list

The patient can start the intake within a week of referral. For post-operative pathways or acute complaints usually within a few days.

02

Structured reporting

At intake, at fixed evaluation moments and at discharge you receive a concise summary with diagnosis, treatment plan, progress and final outcome. Ready to be added directly to the patient file.

03

Criteria-based rehabilitation

We measure strength, mobility, capacity and sport-specific function objectively. Return-to-sport and return-to-work decisions are supported by test results, not by a timeline.

04

Diagnostic ultrasound

Available in-house to support diagnosis and the treatment process. When there is doubt about the structural diagnosis we coordinate via our network with a radiologist or orthopaedic specialist.

05

Multidisciplinary approach

The team consists of physiotherapists, sports physiotherapists and manual therapists. For more complex cases we coordinate internally or via our network with sports physicians and orthopaedic specialists.

OUR METHOD

Our unique method

Repeat.
01 / PHASE 1

Discover

Every treatment begins with an extensive intake. This gives us a complete picture of your physical health, movement patterns and mental well-being. We use a holistic approach and look beyond physical complaints alone. Think sleep habits, nutrition, hydration, movement and daily stressors.

02 / PHASE 2

Educate

Understanding your complaints is the key to lasting recovery. We make sure you understand where your symptoms come from and how to manage them. This helps you recognise the signals your body sends and prevent future complaints.

03 / PHASE 3

Recreate

We work from a tailored programme to address the weaknesses in your body. Movement is central to our approach. With specific, personalised exercises we increase your body's capacity to handle load and help you build durable movement habits. This reduces the chance of recurring complaints.

04 / PHASE 4

Evaluate

Evaluation is an essential part of our approach. We monitor your progress regularly and adjust the treatment plan when needed. This keeps the therapy aligned with your goals and needs at every phase of the process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How can I refer a patient?

Referrals can be made via Zorgmail, by email to info@movementbasedtherapy.nl or by phone on +31 6 20 478 760. A formal referral letter is not required (physiotherapy is directly accessible in the Netherlands) but is useful for handover.

What is the average waiting time?

For a first intake we work without a waiting list. For post-operative pathways or acute complaints we usually schedule within a few days, otherwise within a week.

How is reporting back to the referrer handled?

By default you receive a short report after the intake (diagnosis and treatment plan), at fixed evaluation moments during the pathway and at discharge with test results and final status. On request we can report more frequently or consult during the pathway.

What specialisations are present in the team?

The team consists of physiotherapists, sports physiotherapists (BIG registered, master in sports physiotherapy) and manual therapists. Additional expertise: dry needling, ultrasound, running analysis and breathing coaching.

Do you work with networks and health insurers?

We are a member of the Trauma Network Amsterdam and have contracts with most major Dutch health insurers in 2026. A current overview is available on request.

Can I refer a patient for diagnostic ultrasound only?

Yes, we offer musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound. A referral for ultrasound only is possible, with findings reported back to the referrer.
