Ankle pain

A sprained ankle takes more than a few days' rest. Without targeted rehabilitation, your ankle stays vulnerable to re-injury. We treat acute ankle injuries, chronic instability and Achilles tendon complaints with a programme that systematically rebuilds your ankle's capacity to handle load.

Which ankle conditions exist in general?

There are a few common ankle conditions that we see in the clinic. Below we describe the most common.

Sprained ankle / torn ankle ligaments

The best-known ankle condition that almost everyone has experienced is a sprained ankle. With a sprain, the inner ligaments, outer ligaments and tendons of the ankle can be damaged. This may come with swelling and discolouration of the ankle joint.

In many cases a sprained ankle responds well to rehabilitation. It is important to retrain coordination and strength of the ankle joint before returning to your sport. In more severe cases the damage is significant enough that surgery is indicated. That involves a longer rehabilitation. Here too, it is important to go through the programme with an experienced therapist, to prevent complications or a new ankle injury.

Fracture

Fractures are unfortunately relatively common in the ankle joint. The ankle is made up of many small bones that can be damaged under high impact. Depending on the severity of the fracture, surgery may be indicated. That programme will always involve close collaboration with the hospital.

Stress fracture

A less frequent but very persistent injury is a stress fracture. A stress fracture means a small crack or break in the bone caused by overloading. We often see this in runners with high weekly mileage. It causes a nagging pain that feels very sharp and localised. Symptoms vary per location. If you have prolonged sharp pain in a specific spot around your foot that does not subside and is also present at rest, book an appointment with a physiotherapist.

Our approach to ankle pain

Our approach

At Movement Based Therapy, as the name suggests, we are specialised in movement. Our treatment methods always have the same starting point: getting someone pain-free through exercise.

The treatment plan is always tailored to your needs and goals. We work towards autonomy: during the programme we also share knowledge. That way, if symptoms ever return, you know what to do yourself to prevent them from getting worse.

Collaboration with the sports physicians at OLVG West

Our clinic has a working partnership with the sports physicians at OLVG West. Within this collaboration, the specialists trust the quality of our rehabilitation programmes. Conversely, we have great confidence in the diagnostics by the sports physicians.

When needed, we can often arrange a quick appointment with one of the specialists at the hospital. That gives us access to high-quality diagnostics fast.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need a GP referral for ankle pain?

No, physiotherapy is directly accessible in the Netherlands. You can book an appointment without a referral. During your intake we carry out the screening and set up the treatment plan.

How long does recovery from a sprained ankle take?

It depends on the severity. Mild sprains often recover within a few weeks, severe ligament injuries can take 6 to 12 weeks. It is important to fully restore coordination and strength before returning to sport, otherwise the ankle stays vulnerable to re-injury.

When is it a stress fracture?

With a stress fracture you get a nagging pain that feels sharp and localised, often also at rest. Common in runners with high weekly mileage. With persistent sharp pain in a specific spot, also at rest, book an appointment with a physiotherapist.

Do you work with a sports physician or orthopaedic surgeon?

Yes, we have a working partnership with the sports physicians at OLVG West. For unclear or severe symptoms we can arrange diagnostics and multidisciplinary collaboration quickly.

How many treatments will I need?

That depends on the nature of the condition. At the end of your intake we give you a realistic estimate of the treatment programme, so you know what to expect.

Can I rehabilitate with you after ankle surgery?

Yes, we guide post-operative recovery after ankle surgery. We work with objective criteria for building load, strength and sport-specific demands.

I've been helped tremendously by multiple members of the team for various issues over the course of about a year now. Not all team members have been my PT, but I have met them all and they are all great.
