What kinds of back pain are there?

Back pain can broadly be divided into two categories: non-specific back pain and specific back pain.

Non-specific back pain

90% of back pain is non-specific, meaning no specific structural damage shows up on a scan. The cause often lies in a combination of mental and physical overload of the back. The key is to map the stressors that are present and how to address them.

Specific back pain

Specific back pain has a clear identifiable cause, for example a herniated disc or vertebral fracture. This is much less common, but no less debilitating. Setting up a proper treatment plan is essential for recovery.

At Movement Based Therapy, as the name suggests, we specialise in movement. Our treatment methods always have the same starting point: getting you back to pain-free movement through targeted exercise.

We always approach back pain holistically, because we see that many more factors play a role than just physical load. The treatment plan is always tailored to your needs and goals.

We work towards autonomy: during the programme we also pass on knowledge, so if symptoms return you know exactly what to do to prevent them from getting worse.

Discover

Every treatment starts with a thorough intake. This gives us a complete picture of your physical health, movement patterns and mental well-being. We take a holistic approach and look beyond physical symptoms alone. Think sleep habits, nutrition, hydration, movement and daily stress factors.

Educate

Understanding your condition is the key to lasting recovery. We make sure you understand where your symptoms come from and how to manage them. This helps you recognise your body's signals and prevent future issues.

We work through a tailored programme that targets weaknesses in the body. Movement is at the centre of our treatment method. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need a GP referral for back pain?

No, physiotherapy is directly accessible in the Netherlands. You can book an appointment without a referral. We carry out the screening during your intake and set up the treatment plan together.

What is non-specific back pain?

Non-specific back pain is back pain without identifiable structural damage on a scan. This is by far the most common form, around 90% of all back pain. The cause often lies in a combination of physical and mental overload.

Do I need an MRI or scan?

Often not. For non-specific back pain, imaging usually adds no value. We use clinical screening to decide whether a referral is needed. If there is any doubt, we coordinate with your GP or a specialist.

Can I keep exercising with back pain?

For most back pain, staying active is actually helpful. We help you work out what load is manageable and build up from there. Complete rest is rarely the solution.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the nature of the condition. At the end of your intake we give you a realistic estimate of the treatment programme so you know what to expect.

Do you also work with people who have a herniated disc?

Yes, we support both conservative recovery and post-surgery rehabilitation after a herniated disc. For red-flag symptoms or any doubt, we coordinate directly with your GP or a specialist.

Three locations in Amsterdam: Houthavens in Amsterdam-West, NDSM in Amsterdam-North and Oostenburg in Amsterdam-East. Book at the location that suits you best.
