Post-surgery rehabilitation at Movement Based Therapy

What is the Trauma Network

The Trauma Network Amsterdam is a collaboration between hospitals, trauma surgeons, orthopaedic specialists and physiotherapists in the region. Short lines between the specialist who performed the surgery and the physiotherapist guiding the rehabilitation mean a pathway without information gaps. The network monitors the quality of trauma rehabilitation and sets standards for affiliated practices.

What that means for you

If you come to us for rehabilitation after a fracture, surgery or complex injury, we have direct access to the network of clinicians who started your pathway. We work according to network protocols, report back to the referrer and align the rehabilitation plan with the surgeon's guidelines. So you do not fall through the cracks, and everyone involved in your pathway knows what the next step is.

FOR REFERRERS

At Movement Based Therapy we are ready to help your patients with high-quality physiotherapy care. Our team of specialist physiotherapists works with a movement-focused approach to guide patients through recovery and back to their sports goals. We have a range of expertise in-house, but are also critical of our own work. If we believe a referral does not fit us, we will help find a suitable alternative.

Why refer to MBT?

  • Specialist care: We specialise in the treatment of (sports) injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation and people with long-standing pain complaints.
  • Individually tailored treatments: We use our in-house method to systematically build a tailored treatment pathway for every patient.
  • Preventive approach: Beyond recovery, we focus on the longer term, so patients return stronger and with less pain — and have the tools to manage recurring issues themselves.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration: We work closely with GPs, specialists and other healthcare providers to ensure holistic and efficient treatment.
OUR ROLE

What network membership means.

01

Short lines to the specialist

Direct contact with the trauma surgeon or orthopaedic specialist through the network. Questions about load tolerance, restrictions or the next step are handled and steered quickly through these short lines of communication.

02

Working with network protocols

For common trauma pathways we use the protocols the network developed together with the hospitals. That means predictable phasing and clear criteria for every step.

03

Criteria-based progression

In every trauma pathway we test strength, mobility and function objectively. Only when you meet the criteria do you move to the next phase. Not a time-based protocol but a capacity-based one.

04

Reporting back to the referrer

Surgeons and GPs receive a brief progress report at fixed moments. For follow-up appointments at the hospital they have the current status of your rehabilitation to hand.

05

Onward referral when needed

If recovery stalls or we spot a complication, we coordinate quickly via the network with the right specialist. No extra waiting time, no detours.

OUR METHOD

Our unique method

Repeat.
01 / PHASE 1

Discover

Every treatment begins with an extensive intake. This gives us a complete picture of your physical health, movement patterns and mental well-being. We use a holistic approach and look beyond physical complaints alone. Think sleep habits, nutrition, hydration, movement and daily stressors.

02 / PHASE 2

Educate

Understanding your complaints is the key to lasting recovery. We make sure you understand where your symptoms come from and how to manage them. This helps you recognise the signals your body sends and prevent future complaints.

03 / PHASE 3

Recreate

We work from a tailored programme to address the weaknesses in your body. Movement is central to our approach. With specific, personalised exercises we increase your body's capacity to handle load and help you build durable movement habits. This reduces the chance of recurring complaints.

Evaluate

Evaluation is an essential part of our approach. We monitor your progress regularly and adjust the treatment plan when needed. This keeps the therapy aligned with your goals and needs at every phase of the process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What exactly is the Trauma Network Amsterdam?

The Trauma Network is a regional collaboration of hospitals, trauma surgeons, orthopaedic specialists and physiotherapists. It ensures seamless care after surgery or trauma, from the hospital to rehabilitation outside its walls.

Do I need a referral to start trauma rehabilitation at MBT?

No, physiotherapy is directly accessible in the Netherlands. In practice most people have a discharge letter or referral from the hospital after surgery or trauma. Bring it to the intake — we will then have the relevant information immediately.

Is trauma rehabilitation covered by my health insurance?

For chronic diagnoses (such as after surgery) physiotherapy is reimbursed from the 21st treatment onwards from the basic insurance. The first 20 fall under supplementary insurance. Check your policy or ask us — we will help you figure it out.

Which hospitals are in the network?

The Trauma Network Amsterdam works with Amsterdam UMC, OLVG, BovenIJ and Spaarne Gasthuis, among others. We have direct lines to the trauma surgeons and orthopaedic specialists at these hospitals.

How soon can I start after surgery?

Rehabilitation often starts in the hospital. After discharge, a quick start is important to limit loss of condition and muscle strength. We have no waiting list, you can usually be seen within a week of discharge.

Which locations can I visit for trauma rehabilitation?

All three of our locations: Houthavens (Amsterdam-West), NDSM (Amsterdam-North) and Oostenburg (Amsterdam-East). Choose the location closest to your home or work.

I've been helped tremendously by multiple members of the team for various issues over the course of about a year now. Not all team members have been my PT, but I have met them all and they are all great.
