Shoulder pain

Shoulder pain when reaching overhead, an arm you can no longer lift, or symptoms after a fall? We treat impingement, rotator cuff problems, frozen shoulder and biceps tendon complaints with manual therapy, targeted exercise therapy and strength training. For surgery we work closely with the orthopaedic specialists at Xpert Clinics and OLVG.

What kinds of shoulder pain are there?

Shoulder pain is complex. The shoulder has a wide range of movement and many muscles are involved.

Acute shoulder pain

With acute shoulder pain, pain and sometimes swelling are present almost immediately. You have to stop the activity and the arm becomes difficult to move.

Chronic shoulder pain

With chronic shoulder pain, pain is often present for a longer period. It can also feel sharp, as if something is torn. Because of the complexity of the joint, this often comes down to a disruption in muscle coordination. The muscles no longer work together as they should, which causes pain.

Our approach

At Movement Based Therapy, as the name suggests, we specialise in movement. Our treatment methods always have the same starting point: getting you back to pain-free movement through targeted exercise.

The treatment plan is always tailored to your needs and goals. We work towards autonomy: during the programme we also pass on knowledge, so if symptoms return you know exactly what to do to prevent them from getting worse.

Is surgery needed?

Sometimes the shoulder complaint is so severe that surgery is required to restore the joint. At our practice we work closely with specialists at OLVG and Xpert Clinics.

This network allows us to work quickly and effectively across disciplines. We are also specialised in rehabilitation after surgery. Questions? Get in touch via the options below.

04

Autonomy as the goal

During your programme you learn how to manage recurring symptoms yourself. Knowledge as part of recovery.

OUR METHOD

Our unique method

Repeat.
01 / PHASE 1

Discover

Every treatment starts with a thorough intake. This gives us a complete picture of your physical health, movement patterns and mental well-being. We take a holistic approach and look beyond physical symptoms alone. Think sleep habits, nutrition, hydration, movement and daily stress factors.

02 / PHASE 2

Educate

Understanding your condition is the key to lasting recovery. We make sure you understand where your symptoms come from and how to manage them. This helps you recognise your body's signals and prevent future issues.

03 / PHASE 3

Recreate

We work through a tailored programme that targets weaknesses in the body. Movement is at the centre of our treatment method. With specific exercises tuned to you, we build your body's capacity to handle load and help you develop sustainable movement habits. This reduces the chance of recurring symptoms.

Evaluate

Evaluation is an essential part of our approach. We monitor your progress regularly and adjust the treatment plan when needed. This keeps the therapy aligned with your goals and needs at every stage of the process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need a GP referral for shoulder pain?

No, physiotherapy is directly accessible in the Netherlands. You can book an appointment without a referral. We carry out the screening during your intake and set up the treatment plan together.

Which shoulder conditions do you treat?

We treat the full spectrum: impingement, rotator cuff problems, frozen shoulder, instability and dislocations, AC joint complaints, biceps tendinopathy and post-surgery recovery after acromioplasty, cuff repair or Latarjet.

What is the difference between acute and chronic shoulder pain?

Acute symptoms come on suddenly, often with immediate pain and restricted movement. Chronic symptoms are present for longer and often trace back to a disruption in the coordination of the complex shoulder joint.

Do you work with orthopaedic surgeons?

Yes, we have short lines with the orthopaedic surgeons at OLVG and Xpert Clinics. For severe or unclear symptoms we can quickly switch to multidisciplinary care and refer on.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the nature of the condition. At the end of your intake we give you a realistic estimate of the treatment programme so you know what to expect.

How soon can I return to sport after a shoulder injury?

This differs per condition. We work with objective return-to-sport criteria, not just pain-free but back at performance level. We measure strength and stability per phase before building up load.

I've been helped tremendously by multiple members of the team for various issues over the course of about a year now. Not all team members have been my PT, but I have met them all and they are all great.
